What Isshinryu Karate can do for your child

"Respect, confidence and self-worth are what you learn at Clyde Stanley's Karate. My only regret is that I didn't start my daughter in karate sooner."

Dear Parent,

You've seen the ads.  You've heard the other parents talk.  You may have even read the articles about the benefits of martial arts training for children.  But still, you're wondering "How can karate teach values - and life skills?"  Well, we'd like to take this opportunity to tell you.

Since 1975, we've been helping children just like yours gain the character building tools found only in martial arts training.  No other activity or sport can match up.  Tools like perseverance, positive mental attitude, self discipline and goal setting aren't always taught effectively in school, and are also often missing from your soccer and little league fields and basketball courts.  This is unfortunate, because teaching children these basic life skills, at a young age, can have a HUGE impact on the degree of success and happiness that children achieve later in life.

The Twins

What's the biggest obstacle to your child's success?

Your child's first and biggest challenge doesn't come from the neighborhood bully.  It comes, instead, from personal issues.  For example:

Overweight Children

Overweight children are often ostracized because of there appearance.  We've seen many kids like these who've lost a few pounds through self-discipline and exercise and gained tremendous amounts of self-esteem in the process.>

Small Children

Physically smaller children get picked on a lot because of their size.  We've seen children like these gain in confidence as their strength and abilities grow.  This keeps them out of fights because they no longer feel like they have to fight.

Shy Children

Shy children are always afraid of trying something new.  Often this is because they are convinced they will fail.  We teach them how to overcome their fears and develop a winners' attitude. through repeated successful martial arts experiences.

Overactive, Inattentive Children

Children such as these often need outlets for their energy as well as help controlling it.  We teach them how to channel that energy and focus their attention.

Our activities channel children's energy and aggression.

man and child Sometimes parents hesitate to enroll their children in martial arts classes because they feel it will make them more aggressive.  In fact, the opposite is true.  Our programs have been found to have a "leveling out" effect on kids.  For those that are full of high spirits and even aggressiveness it gives an acceptable outlet for their energy.

At the same time, we drive home the message repeatedly that their skills are not to be used for showing off.  At Clyde Stanley's Karate and Self-Defense, it is constantly stressed that their karate skills require them to not be abusive or offensive.  Our students understand that their abilities are for defense only.

On the other end of the scale, children who are shy and withdrawn get the opportunity to come out of their shells in an environment that is positive and reassuring.  They learn to become more assertive, not more aggressive.

Our program teaches lifetime self defense skills.

Clyde and Child

Here at Clyde Stanley's Karate and Self-Defense, we pride ourselves on giving our students the confidence and self-respect to recognize and avoid potentially threatening situations.  But let's face it, it's a rough world out there.  The numerous tragic incidents of school violence that we've seen on the news have focused new attention on schoolyard bullying and harassment.  One study found that 90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims.  Being bullied can make children feel lonely, unhappy, afraid, unsafe and leave emotional scars that can last well into adulthood.

It may surprise you that not all martial arts schools really teach effective self-defense, instead concentrating on tournament fighting that doesn't always translate well into practical self-defense methods.  You can be confident that at our dojo, your children are learning techniques that can be used effectively.  Remember, the skills they learn are a lot like insurance: you hope they'll never need to use it, but when they do, it's great to have it!

"I could write a book about our students' success stories," he said.  "We have had "F" student become "A" students, and we have had extremely shy kids become class leaders.  There have also been cases where they have used their knowledge and skills to defend themselves and escape with their lives."

Call us today to help your children receive the life skills they need and the self-esteem they deserve!
